Masses of violets are all around the house this year.<br />

The azaleas are budding and ready to burst open.<br />

My white peony is budding, too, so it won't be long until it blooms.<br />

This volunteer mullein is looking great. The leaves will be picked in a month or so and kept for respiratory teas when needed.<br />

<br />
Be sure and check your gardens for cleavers, aka the velcro weed, for yourself and especially if you have pets. Young dogs love them and they're very beneficial to their health as they cleanse the blood of toxins.<br />

Here's our Rat Terrier, Tillie having her tonic (fresh cleavers) for the day. (Yes, Rat Terriers catch mice and rats.)<br />

So, I was grilling burgers with a little friend. We think it's a tree frog. <a href="https://viewingnaturewitheileen.blogspot.com/2020/03/saturdays-critters-328.html" target="_blank">Linking with Eileen at Saturday's Critters.</a><br />

I've been working on a 6 pound batch of soap this week. I make a basic batch then hand-mill the soap and add oils for fragrance and beneficial properties. This lavender soap is great for it's antiseptic qualities and it smells heavenly.<br />

We're still getting a <b><i>lot</i></b> of rain, but it sure beats none.<br />

So, we heard there were major protests in China with all kinds of people on the streets protesting. Remember that? The next thing we heard a lot of the protesters are unaccounted for then we heard a novel virus killed most of them. Hmmm, that sounds a bit suspect to me. Then our own "trusty" media started blaming the president for the virus, lol, while simultaneously blasting fear into every household that doesn't yet realize their "news" may not be exactly trustworthy. (This might be a good time to turn off the TV. ) Tell me, does anyone know anyone who truly has the virus? I don't. In fact I don't know anyone who knows anyone who knows anyone that has it. And I refuse to buy more of anything than I normally would at the grocery store. Besides that we have a promise as such that should give us peace. Psalm 136, the whole chapter is amazing, but verse 25 in particular should be a comfort to us just now. It is to me, anyways.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">So, you finally decided to bloom. lol</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We have to remember that thousands die of the flu every year in nearly every state in the country. And while we don't like that, yet it is a part of life. So, I hope we'll just calm down out there and think about something besides clearing out our grocery stores. Planning our gardens or reading a good book might be the best way to get through all the craziness going on right now.<br />
<br />
This bird bottle has been hanging on the eastward side of our back deck for many years but has yet to be home to a single bird.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
You can imagine my surprise when I noticed it has a nest in it. I'm not sure which bird made the nest, but I'm looking forward to finding out. There are no eggs yet, but I'll keep watching.<br />

All I can say is I love "global warming" if it means more snow for us here in the foothills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Meanwhile the daffodils kept blooming.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pKT3tG-7-aM/XlLiwLuzBoI/AAAAAAAAH48/l4PmgwkDeRo8e94CN9H7cZfEXH_1Ku0QQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-20200217-WA0000.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1408" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pKT3tG-7-aM/XlLiwLuzBoI/AAAAAAAAH48/l4PmgwkDeRo8e94CN9H7cZfEXH_1Ku0QQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/IMG-20200217-WA0000.jpeg" width="350" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's a gray, wet day here, but you can see this puffed up Mourning Dove lording it over the food supply. There's one in every crowd, methinks.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
A Titmouse and Cardinal finally get a chance to dine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k1YHs6Fp23k/XlPWwhQJrhI/AAAAAAAAH6c/QJn78H_XhVg0b0gG8SKvQaR246FuLnCwwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200224_083653.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k1YHs6Fp23k/XlPWwhQJrhI/AAAAAAAAH6c/QJn78H_XhVg0b0gG8SKvQaR246FuLnCwwCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/20200224_083653.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And since we last visited I dabbled here and there cleaning some things that had not been cleaned in a coon's age. My new, already-went-through-the-wash dishcloth from Dollar General released enough dye that I could have tie-dyed a t-shirt. Had I just known beforehand...lol. I'm trying to embrace the viral love of dollar store merchandise, but so far it's a 50/50 toss-up for me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gkvKapEMgfk/XlLkKD4ovtI/AAAAAAAAH5Q/8rRES1xA35ocV_o4K5PYNZFW6ESsm_mEgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20200223_092219.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gkvKapEMgfk/XlLkKD4ovtI/AAAAAAAAH5Q/8rRES1xA35ocV_o4K5PYNZFW6ESsm_mEgCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/20200223_092219.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I've been purging and down-sizing my earthly possessions (Goodman won't let me touch his, but I really WANT to help him go smaller, read that THROW STUFF OUT/sell off.) and was horrified when I opened a box of silver pins/brooches that were nearly black from oxidation. I recently got a new denim jacket on sale for a meager sum and decided I'd use some of those pins to dress it up a bit. Apparently, boho/boohoo(?) has taken over every fashion genre so I flung caution to the wind and adorned it heavily. LOL<br />
Anyways, look how tarnished some of those pins were.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-32ss3Ye94A0/XlLscF7IYBI/AAAAAAAAH6A/2ojEvGdBi7QlPz7q4Cys8Hf_eEUgKxRMACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/IMG-20200221-WA0031.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-32ss3Ye94A0/XlLscF7IYBI/AAAAAAAAH6A/2ojEvGdBi7QlPz7q4Cys8Hf_eEUgKxRMACLcBGAsYHQ/s400/IMG-20200221-WA0031.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I do most things old school, but I didn't have time to sit and polish those pins with MAAS so I used <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhtGxujrLTc" target="_blank">this quick method</a> and lo, they fairly sparkle. And no, I'm not likely to wear all those pins together on my jacket, fashion be gone.<br />

<br />
On Saturday under a forecast of rain all day we began to see white puffs falling from the sky and landing on everything.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I wanted to let those of you who may have joint, rheumatoid and some other types of pain know about an herb that is kicking pain to the curb for a lot of folks, Goodman and myself included. Goodman used to have a lot of knee pain. I used to have pain from arthritis in a couple of joints on my fingers. We are now pain free thanks to Moringa. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Organic-Moringa-Oleifera-Powder-Capsules/dp/B00Y2MAE9O/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=12X1HOYTOI3J0&keywords=moringa+capsules&qid=1581371877&sprefix=moringa%2Caps%2C173&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEySEo4VTZTMk05QTZTJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMTE0NjEwMkwxWkNSSE1VMjQzQSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMTM0Njg2UUFDUzlORFA4OUVWJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==" target="_blank">Click here to see it on Amazon</a><br />

Don't Ever Have A Heart Attack on Medicare....<br />
That's a little something to remember in case you may start to have a coronary episode when you're older and on Medicare. I hear that if you have other insurance not connected to Medicare you'll be okay to proceed with the attack and be treated well at a hospital, otherwise you may regret the whole business. Here's why I've drawn this conclusion:<br />
<br />
True $tory<br />
A former elementary school teacher had a heart attack just two years ago and found herself in the hospital. She'd had trouble breathing and was experiencing chest pain so her sons took her to the ER. She was examined and sure enough had had a heart attack. She was admitted and taken to a room where the air-conditioning wasn't working. This was in the South in the middle of the summer. It gets really hot here y'all. The sons demanded a fan and one was brought to her room. The next day someone came to get the fan to take it to another room, but the sons told them the fan was staying where it was. The former school teacher is diabetic, but the food that was brought to her room were things she couldn't eat, very high in carbohydrates. When she told the nurse she couldn't eat the food she was told to go ahead and they'd give her a round of fast-acting insulin. I won't go into all the sordid details of the actual medical care, but that part is not a happy story, either. The former teacher had dotted all the I's and crossed all the T's when she signed up for Medicare Part A and makes monthly payments for Part B to cover everything Part A doesn't cover. I'm as baffled as everyone else, but it seems to me that times have changed drastically in the past 15 years. Where the elderly were once cared for in the hospital, they don't seem to be important patients unless they have additional insurance that charges can be submitted to.<br />
Eat healthy y'all.<br />

Hello from our snow covered hills!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Winter is on y'all! (I know, not quite.) It's been a long, long time since we had snow before Thanksgiving, and it'll be gone in a few days, but for now I'll take it. I love snow. ♥</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's not a mirage behind our pasture fence. A neighbor's farm was sold and subdivided a few years ago. It's sad for us because when we bought our place the hill was covered with 35 beef cattle. Now there are that many houses. Times change, they do. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NuX8vmnOiq8/XcrbZhAqWDI/AAAAAAAAHxM/Ub5mvsFCiGMFUvOUvZJPxZ8SDRUGmy0HQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/aim.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NuX8vmnOiq8/XcrbZhAqWDI/AAAAAAAAHxM/Ub5mvsFCiGMFUvOUvZJPxZ8SDRUGmy0HQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/aim.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We got a total of 2.5 inches of snow and very frigid temps, for us anyways. It's a bit odd to see snow on trees that haven't dropped their leaves, yet. o.O<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My mother-in-law was the kindest person on earth and is very much missed by her family. Her story is a bit painful to recall, but here it is. She had a scary episode of chest pain along with shortness of breath and was transported to the local hospital. The small town hospital released her with no real diagnosis (imagine that) so the family arranged for her to go to the best hospital in the big city nearest her small town for testing. An angioplasty was ordered and the family remained hopeful she would return home better off then when she went. That didn't happen. She had a major, life-changing stroke DURING the angioplasty procedure. She spent weeks in the hospital then months in a therapy center recovering from the stroke. Her heart condition took a back burner while she learned to speak, feed herself and walk all over again. She never fully recovered, and one year after the angioplasty she died due to complications from the stroke. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A good friend of mine worked for a group of heart specialists at the time and kept close tabs on the situation with my mother-in-law. She informed me that strokes were <u>very common</u> during an angioplasty procedure. What? Then why do they do them? I think we all know the answer to that question. </div>
We're still harvesting our beloved Rutger's and heirloom Beefsteak tomatoes, but they're definitely slowing down and ripening before they get very large. The tiny ones are cherry tomatoes from a volunteer that popped up beside one of our raised beds.<br />
Goodman took a few days off work a couple of weeks ago so we could have a full day to visit our favorite apple orchard, Kyle Carver Orchard in Cosby, Tenn.. I always love seeing this covered bridge built in 1875 as we pass by it on our way to the orchard.<br />
THE BIG SNOW JOB:</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
a.k.a. Daylight Savings Time</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My state is going to vote on staying on DST permanently. Whaa??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gjJFhlrX6Zg/XbCXCDh96nI/AAAAAAAAHwU/HEEYGfL7uCoywRXp_PZV3H8E5lvfWp-UwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/daylight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="564" data-original-width="564" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gjJFhlrX6Zg/XbCXCDh96nI/AAAAAAAAHwU/HEEYGfL7uCoywRXp_PZV3H8E5lvfWp-UwCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/daylight.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The reason isn't what people have been told for years, that it helps the farmers. That's always been a full-of-baloney statement. Farmers think it's stupid as most of them get up long before daylight anyway. Businessmen are the only ones wanting DST permanently because folks are out and about spending money until later in the day on it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
What they aren't considering are the busloads of kids that never see the light of day at their bus stops. Some kids have parents that wait with them in the dark of the morning, but </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A LOT OF THEM DON'T. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm convinced we have lily-livered politicians that simply don't care as long as goods are sold and money is made. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And, yes, that burns my hide. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have a great week, y'all!<br />
Leaves have been falling from our Sugar Maple trees from lack of moisture without turning the usual yellow or orange. Sadly, they're a gnarly black as above or just brown as below.<br />
<br />
I recently bought a book that I wish I'd had sooner. The Backyard Pharmacy Book is by the same author as the Be Your Own "Doctor" book, and it's a real gem in the herbal remedy genre. (Side note: There is also a Be Your Own Pediatrician book by the same author that I hope to get someday.)<br />
<br />
The author is very knowledgeable on the subject of herbs and how to administer them for optimal benefit. <br />
True Flu $hot $tory:<br />
<br />
For many years Goodman worked for a company that supplied their employees with flu shots at no personal cost. He didn't want to miss workdays at home in bed so his work ethic bade him to get the shot, until looking back, he noticed that he came down with the flu every year he got the shot, but didn't get sick when he didn't get the shot. And he wasn't the only one, either. 0.0 Hmm<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TX-vaTEDw1M/XZdwSlSp5WI/AAAAAAAAHtU/dkLXAiUZYqMAbvIavUelNuT2gLRK8k20ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/hope-recover-flu-shot-get-well-ecard-someecards.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="237" data-original-width="425" height="222" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TX-vaTEDw1M/XZdwSlSp5WI/AAAAAAAAHtU/dkLXAiUZYqMAbvIavUelNuT2gLRK8k20ACLcBGAsYHQ/s400/hope-recover-flu-shot-get-well-ecard-someecards.webp" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I've done a lot of reading over the years about flu shots. Mind you, I've never had one, but I've never had the flu, either. Some people think they have the flu when they get a bad cold, but unless you have a temperature and a host of other symptoms, you don't have the flu.<br />
<br />
Did you know there are so many sub-strains of the flu that there is no way this side of heaven to prevent a flu epidemic even if every last person on earth got the shot? No one can see into the future to know which strain will be going around or even IF a strain will be going around. It's that simple.<br />
<br />
What's not simple is the math involved:<br />
Did you know that flu shots are a nearly 2 billion dollar annual industry in the U.S. alone? That's a lot of money.<br />
<br />
p.s. For the glass pumpkin lovers, there are similar ones in three colors at <a href="https://www.lakeside.com/Home-Decor/Candles---Candle-Holders/Lighted+Glass+Pumpkin+Hurricane+Lanterns/prod3080245.jmp?mrkgcl=888&mrkgadid=3210105153&cid=GooglePLA-859047011&ukwcid=+&product_id=859047011&adpos=1o2&creative=197302785758&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=CjwKCAjw29vsBRAuEiwA9s-0B_RCtCzHY3d7BHqeAskREkroFwdCmvaPlWkH6mLOlSk8nHGwh1204RoC3z0QAvD_BwE" target="_blank">this site</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hello from the foothills! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We are sooo looking forward to fall weather, but we're enjoying a few clumps of Morning Glory vines on the pasture fences in the meantime. </div>
<br />
The summer season started out wet and pleasant, but it's closing out hot, parched and dry for us here in the hills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
This Burning Bush (another volunteer from the neighbor's bush) has already turned red due to lack of moisture. I don't know how this will affect the fall colors in the Smokies. Hopefully it won't.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n6dd-Ydtyi8/XXpabpuLGYI/AAAAAAAAHqQ/w3EK1DME6Ko3cgU9Kg3T5NeiRQYeLOioQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/20190912_071200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n6dd-Ydtyi8/XXpabpuLGYI/AAAAAAAAHqQ/w3EK1DME6Ko3cgU9Kg3T5NeiRQYeLOioQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/20190912_071200.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Earlier this year a family member was taken to the emergency room at their local hospital and was diagnosed with gallbladder issues and told it should come out immediately. The diagnosis was extremely helpful, and we're ever so grateful for that, but the surgery was NOT necessary at all*. In fact, what the family member wasn't told is that there are often lasting ill-effects to having it removed. I personally know two people who have shared that they are plagued with virtually chronic diarrhea years after they had theirs removed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I wanted to tell you about a very short shortcut (Thank you, Joybilie Farm, for the idea!) for making fresh sauerkraut if you don't like to bother with shredding cabbage. I didn't grow cabbage this year so I bought 4 bags of coleslaw mix (on sale, of course :) to make this half-gallon of probiotic rich kraut. I used <a href="https://www.phoenixhelix.com/2013/05/08/no-fail-no-pound-sauerkraut/" target="_blank">this method for the fermentation process</a> and let it ferment for four weeks.<br />
August has been a busy, hot mess of interminably muggy days, but thankfully we've had rain and cooler temperatures for the past couple of days. A friend from out of state was here visiting for a week so we did day trips to places she wanted to see. However, this is the only photo I took.<br />
There was a monumental traffic delay due to construction just yesterday in the <a href="https://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm" target="_blank">GSMNP</a>. So, if you're planning a trip to the Smokies soon go <a href="https://www.nps.gov/grsm/index.htm" target="_blank">here</a> and check the status of construction in the areas you'd like to visit.<br />
<br />
My friend took a few pictures, and sent them to me so I'm adding them here.<br />
This is an overlook on the Foothills Parkway.<br />
Rosacea Update:<br />
For the past two years I've tried a lot of things that didn't clear up the rash I had. On July 4th, just last month I talked with someone that had taken a supplement that cleared the rash so I decided to give it a try. I've been taking Dr. Gundry's Vital Reds supplement for the past month, and it has helped in reducing the degree of flushing and cleared nearly all the bumps I had experienced for the past two years. I'm also watching my carb intake, but that alone wasn't enough. I'm glad I heard of this product.<br />
<br />
I'm interrupting my normally irregular posting schedule to tell you I'm watching a docu-series on the black plague of the 21st century, diabetes. It's free now but will not be free after this airing. I have to tell you I'm only into the second video, and I'm very concerned by what I've learned. If you or anyone you know has diabetes this series will help you understand the disease from a totally different perspective as there are interviews with health professionals that will surprise you. Most patients think as long as they have diabetes under "control" with insulin they're okay. Not so. I don't have it myself, but I have family members who do, so I'm all in to help them.<br />
Our plain white Rose of Sharons finally opened up.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This will be our second heirloom cantaloupe, that is if the night critters don't take a shine to it first. ;) Did you know raccoons and coyotes poke holes in them and scoop out the juice? Ask me how I know, lol.<br />
I don't think I've ever posted about my Mulberry trees. They're 1 1/2 years old and already 5 feet high growing in pots on the deck. We're hoping for a small berry harvest next year.<br />
I'll leave you with these sleepy looking hydrangea blossoms. They were blue last month, but the color has turned to fallish hues. Have a great weekend y'all!<br />
Howdy from the hills!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few weeks ago all the Carolina Wrens left the nests. This lil fellow was one of the brood in my wreath on the porch. He's adorable.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Soja8YR4Qk/XThJ3YyBfKI/AAAAAAAAHkE/TFwP5Dmbggkrv2NC3Ncie1CXqR0G3SxOwCLcBGAs/s1600/20190706_153556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2Soja8YR4Qk/XThJ3YyBfKI/AAAAAAAAHkE/TFwP5Dmbggkrv2NC3Ncie1CXqR0G3SxOwCLcBGAs/s400/20190706_153556.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We've had a ton of rain so our Rose of Sharon trees are bursting with blossoms. This pink one was a volunteer from our neighbor's tree.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gBYDr0f8xdg/XTmX4unu1MI/AAAAAAAAHk8/9P8gVO-aPJYZFOHQbuTzHVDSF1KH6R20ACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG-20190723-WA0010.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gBYDr0f8xdg/XTmX4unu1MI/AAAAAAAAHk8/9P8gVO-aPJYZFOHQbuTzHVDSF1KH6R20ACLcBGAs/s400/IMG-20190723-WA0010.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I was at a moving sale three years ago when I spotted a gorgeous double pink Rose of Sharon near their mailbox. I asked if they'd mind me taking a few cuttings as they were moving, and they kindly offered me clippers to cut them. I rooted this one below from a 6 in. cutting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LxFcaBbn04w/XTmYvWrnFrI/AAAAAAAAHlI/3r13PyCtl6AfKlXN1JNQvzByvl689cudACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG-20190713-WA0008.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LxFcaBbn04w/XTmYvWrnFrI/AAAAAAAAHlI/3r13PyCtl6AfKlXN1JNQvzByvl689cudACLcBGAs/s400/IMG-20190713-WA0008.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Goodman thinks this white one that is lightly tinged with pink is the result of cross pollination. We had several of the white ones pop up in our yard that are also from the neighbor's white one. Neighbors can be handy at times. ;)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xxE53NNZF70/XTmYnRMfk9I/AAAAAAAAHlM/8_HP8Wa0Ah42gkZFLEEfTPVXR8TNRunWQCEwYBhgL/s1600/IMG-20190720-WA0024.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xxE53NNZF70/XTmYnRMfk9I/AAAAAAAAHlM/8_HP8Wa0Ah42gkZFLEEfTPVXR8TNRunWQCEwYBhgL/s400/IMG-20190720-WA0024.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This purple Rose of Sharon is a volunteer from one we got from Goodman's old home place in Virginia. It's purple-er in person.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pySJF6oGV3U/XTmd5N_L0wI/AAAAAAAAHlY/7PPxYK-rsz4Nr004xuMtfjwf0fV6dN5uACLcBGAs/s1600/20190725_081554.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pySJF6oGV3U/XTmd5N_L0wI/AAAAAAAAHlY/7PPxYK-rsz4Nr004xuMtfjwf0fV6dN5uACLcBGAs/s400/20190725_081554.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Lastly on the flowers, our white Crape Myrtle has giant blooms this year. They're so heavy they nearly touch the ground.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aDG_pEWNqS4/XThKLuk0b-I/AAAAAAAAHkc/IFPedXj-GmQy5-S8rrKFWS9gCB4Q1T6KwCLcBGAs/s1600/20190613_070843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aDG_pEWNqS4/XThKLuk0b-I/AAAAAAAAHkc/IFPedXj-GmQy5-S8rrKFWS9gCB4Q1T6KwCLcBGAs/s400/20190613_070843.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rosy red runaround:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Three years ago my face began to break out with bumps that I knew were not regular, middle-aged or any other type of acne. I noticed it was a lot worse when I knitted with wool yarn so I attributed the rash to wool. I put all my yarn in storage and waited for the rash to disappear. It didn't. So, my assumption that the wool was the culprit was wrong. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A lady at church advised me to see a doctor because she thought I had rosacea. Turns out that's exactly what it was, and I was given some cream to control it. I asked my (then) doctor if the cream would make the condition go away. She just smiled, and said to call if there were any problems. 0.0</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A month later the rash reappeared. I called and was told to come back to the office. I did and was given a prescription for a second cream. Again, the cream stopped working after a month. I called and was told to come in AGAIN. This time I was prescribed an antibiotic that was "supposed" to get rid of the rosacea once and for all. It didn't. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That was three office visits ($$$) and three prescriptions ($$$), and I was in the same predicament as I was before I saw the doctor. I was finally over it and began my own research on rosacea. I've tried a lot of different things, all of which worked only for a month or so to calm the rash. Currently, I'm taking a supplement high in polyphenols that I'm hoping will correct the problem as some online experts think the problem originates in the stomach. I'll let you know how that goes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My opinion is this: Doctors either don't know or won't tell what causes rosacea since it has created a revolving door of office visits and drug company benefits flowing into their offices. In either case, the right thing to do is to just be honest. No, she's not my doctor anymore.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you or someone you know has had rosacea and gotten rid of it for good, please leave a comment letting me know what you did. I'd be forever grateful. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have a great rest o' the week y'all!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
p.s. After this post was published I became aware of the latest leftist policy at Ravelry so I deleted my account. It's sad,and I'll miss it, but I cannot be a member of any group that seeks to stifle the First Amendment to our Constitution by banning legal, patriotic Americans from referring to our president or his administration while allowing all and often profanity laced liberal references. My question to the owners is: What does politics have to do with knitting, crocheting, spinning or anything else related to the fiber arts anyway? Methinks you have lost your liberal minds. :)<br />
<br />
We had a week or two of sweltering days when the temperature hit 90°F then last week we had rain and very pleasant days. Not so this week...come back to me, springtime weather!<br />
The Carolina Wren family in the fuchsia basket is coming along nicely. There were eight eggs in all, and it's a tight squeeze in the nest now that the hatchlings are growing. <br />
Have I mentioned that I LOVE homegrown tomatoes? My earliest memories of them were when I was 8 years old and stayed at my grandmother's farm for a week. I watched her milk the Jersey, helped peel fruit from the trees and gather garden produce. One afternoon she handed me a salt shaker and told me to go into the garden and eat all the tomatoes I wanted. I obeyed to the fullest extent my stomach could handle. I've never been the same since that day. They do taste better outside.<br />
The hydrangeas are beginning to fade, now, after blooming for a full month, but they're still beautiful. I highly recommend them for your garden. They can easily be started with a cutting from a friend or bought from nurseries, of course.<br />
<br />
Some time ago I was in a medical office for a routine visit when a health professional asked me a question: "Your not taking any drugs for osteoporosis, are you? " (Whaaaa?? was blasting my brain, I'm not old enough....but I managed to recover before I actually spoke. :) They continued, <b> "I was asking because they cause more harm than good and don't help with osteoporosis." </b> <br />
<br />
Now, this was a <b>doctor, </b>a <b>real doctor</b> (that doesn't take bribes (perks) in exchange for prescribing drugs to patients) telling me that legally prescribed drugs for osteoporosis do the patient more harm than good. <br />
<br />
Happily, the <i>Be Your Own Doctor II</i> book offers four pages of things we can do to prevent osteoporosis. I recommend both books in the series as they are invaluable to me, and I've said before, I have no affiliation with them.<br />
<br />
Hope y'all are enjoying the beginnings of summer.<br />
Stay cool!<br />
<br />
Thank you to all who left a comment to let me know I was missed over the past year, and that there is interest in hearing our experience with modern healthcare. We'll get to that in a minute.<br />
Our hydrangeas have been glorious this year due to the abundance of rain we've had.<br />
Last time I told you about the feisty Carolina Wren that built her nest in the fuchsia basket hanging under the back deck. Here is the best photo I could get of her...on the first deck step. She's a flighty little thing so it's not easy to get a photo of any kind. <a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Carolina_Wren/sounds" target="_blank">Click here </a>if you'd like to see a video of one from my favorite bird site.<br />
We discovered another Carolina Wren nest in the wreath on the front porch. She has relatives out front now! I was tempted to tear the nest out, but instead decided I'd just throw away the wreath when all the babies fly away.<br />
I want to make it clearly understood that <i><b>a good doctor in my opinion is a gift from the Lord</b></i>. I'd simply like to share bits of my experiences in hopes that it will inspire others to take their healthcare so seriously that they <b>lay blind trust aside </b>and begin to ask more questions of their doctors and themselves. One excellent question might be: Who will benefit the most from what we term as conventional medicine? The patient or health professional?<br />
<br />
Several years ago I worked in a medical office so I witnessed firsthand the buying, selling and <i>selling out</i> of the profession through the drug companies' reps, who dangled high dollar perks in front of doctors' noses in exchange for prescribing their (sometimes untested) drugs to patients. Yes, that's exactly how that works. Let that sink in for a moment. Goodman, who is diabetic was once prescribed the Byetta pen to help control his blood sugar.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Image result for byetta pen picture" height="339" src="https://www.byettahcp.com/content/dam/physician-services/us/160-hcp-byetta-com/assets/images/Pen_Image_mobile.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="400" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.byettahcp.com/dosing-and-administration.html" target="_blank">Source</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
After he used it, he became excessively agitated and very irritable. He gave it a couple of weeks to get used to it, but he never did so he asked for something else and was prescribed a drug that has since been the subject of several court cases. He asked for something different, again... He finally was given a drug he could tolerate and still uses in a low dosage. (These days he watches his food intake much closer and hopes to reverse the diabetes completely. <a href="https://topdocumentaryfilms.com/simply-raw-reversing-diabetes-in-30-days/" target="_blank">That is possible through a diet of vegetables and fruit. </a>) Back to the Byetta pen.... Several years after he tried it we found out <b><i>it had not been tested at the time he used it.</i></b><br />
<br />
The group of doctors that I worked for were very nice, well-respected folks. However, they scheduled patients in five/ten minute time slots (at the time totaling upwards of $500/hr.) often resulting in the patients feeling as though they'd been left holding their bag as a fast moving train whizzed by them. Imagine how they felt when charged a hefty fare for the ride they felt they never really took. I was told more than once by patients that they didn't have enough time with the doctor and were overcharged, too, but at least they got a <i><b>prescription</b></i>...<br />
<br />
Whew! That was heavy on the writer and the reader, too, I'm sure. The one thing I want to leave you with is we must be careful what we eat because a good diet will serve our bodies well, but a bad one will definitely cause real health problems.<br />
<br />
Have a lovely rest o' the week, y'all!<br />
I'll be waiting around for these heirloom beefsteak tomatoes to ripen...<br />
It's been just over a year since I posted, and I have spent some time considering if I would continue or if I had completed that phase of my journey here. I am, yet, undecided but am here today to share a few pictures and thoughts with you.<br />
A feisty, little Carolina Wren has built a nest in this hanging basket of fuchsia.<br />
There are six eggs, and she is now in set-mode. I didn't want to start her screeching at me so you'll have to imagine her on the nest.<br />
<br />
There's been a lot on my mind during the last year, and I've been encouraged to share a bit of it by several of my readers. (Thank you to all who've contacted me with inquiries as to my health, etc. You are much appreciated and already know that Goodman and I are in good health, thank the Lord.)<br />
<br />
We all have different points of view as we all have different experiences, but some things are just too obvious to ignore, and they are troubling to me, at best. Healthcare in our country is in a state of glaring change and has been for many years. It's just a well-paying <b>business</b> to far too many "health professionals." There are good doctors, yes, but many are not, and the good are too few in number to serve the masses in my opinion.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
We've witnessed unnecessary operations performed for monetary gain <b>many times</b>. I have personally had a few of those myself, but when I realized what was going on I came fully awake and decided there had to be a change. Mind you, even though I make & use herbal preparations for myself and my family members, I'm no doctor and am likely as not to misdiagnose an illness that I am unfamiliar with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bJYKnLEMWok/XO_TvSkio3I/AAAAAAAAHf0/4T5Mw-joOIMlnPZGX-HU2AAWqcZn0koawCLcBGAs/s1600/20190530_085641.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bJYKnLEMWok/XO_TvSkio3I/AAAAAAAAHf0/4T5Mw-joOIMlnPZGX-HU2AAWqcZn0koawCLcBGAs/s400/20190530_085641.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I began searching for help with diagnosing non-life-threatening illnesses, and that search led me to a wonderfully helpful set of books titled Be Your Own Doctor & Be Your Own Doctor II. The books contain a series of easy-to-read stories that are engaging to read and very handy to have at hand in time of need. Also, there are recipes and recommendations so readers may, confidently, begin to "doctor" themselves when a professional is not required.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1EIHsnCnUHA/XO_UTOwAmdI/AAAAAAAAHgE/x-Zo-2E1p5AttmJBMePEawb48TLUdh4pwCLcBGAs/s1600/20190530_090017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1EIHsnCnUHA/XO_UTOwAmdI/AAAAAAAAHgE/x-Zo-2E1p5AttmJBMePEawb48TLUdh4pwCLcBGAs/s400/20190530_090017.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
* Disclaimer: The only interest I have in these books is the wealth of information. I am in no way connected to nor do I receive any monetary gain in any form for anything I say about them. I'm just one who knows they are worth their weight in gold to me and my family. If there is any interest I may be back here to share a bit of the instances where they have saved us from the surgeon's scalpel.<br />
<br />
She's all about details and likes whatever she does to be a step away from the norm.<br />
<br />
She was back this week and this time wanted to try watercolor painting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
Her first attempt fairly burs-ted with color.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Meanwhile I busied myself finishing this spring-y crochet scarf/shawl. It's called the Midsummer Garden Shawlette by Kristin Omdahl. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uu1G3LCn4I&t=79s" target="_blank">The video instructions and chart information is here</a>, and there is another video therefor lefties to make the same shawl. I think it's perfect for filling in those much too low necklines that dress designers are so fond of these days. I'll just go ahead and say I don't care to see anyone's <i>anything</i> that ought to be covered up. I'm just old enough to be over it and don't mind saying so. ;)<br />
I thought I had dug up all the daffodils that were in the pasture several years ago, but we have a bumper crop of them out there this year. I'm calling 2018 the Year of the Daffodils.<br />
We've had the best time birdwatching from the kitchen window for years. I set out water and a few seeds and here they come.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C2OC53vudKw/WoMroj1NMaI/AAAAAAAAHYA/la3Fd3zvlmcwhN-F2M8k-tSfvcxfrBUrQCLcBGAs/s1600/bluebirds.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="955" data-original-width="1600" height="238" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-C2OC53vudKw/WoMroj1NMaI/AAAAAAAAHYA/la3Fd3zvlmcwhN-F2M8k-tSfvcxfrBUrQCLcBGAs/s400/bluebirds.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bluebirds and Purple Finches</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There's always a bird or two to be spotted.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CjYagZenPLw/WoMrxp3GJxI/AAAAAAAAHYE/eBllMfr1VzEvPg1kzlA7IpPNIsBzotSTgCLcBGAs/s1600/cardinalfeeder.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CjYagZenPLw/WoMrxp3GJxI/AAAAAAAAHYE/eBllMfr1VzEvPg1kzlA7IpPNIsBzotSTgCLcBGAs/s400/cardinalfeeder.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Northern Cardinal</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
They'll always show up for a morsel of homemade peanut/raisin suet.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--tuoxL4op24/WoMsAkqn7YI/AAAAAAAAHYM/86CJaqqBGno-ZgvM1Shpm_TEhw1MtYTlgCLcBGAs/s1600/DSC_0052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--tuoxL4op24/WoMsAkqn7YI/AAAAAAAAHYM/86CJaqqBGno-ZgvM1Shpm_TEhw1MtYTlgCLcBGAs/s400/DSC_0052.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Northern Cardinal</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
But since installing <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TI7OPP2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">this window feeder</a> (no affiliation) recently, we don't have to approach a window to see them, so I'd heartily recommend it if you're a mind to do a li'l bit o' effortless, up-close birdwatching.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MsvHuVVnZ-I/WoMs91YfniI/AAAAAAAAHYc/hsB4u61rDLc4I2yQEUeaaoFp31l1ZbP1wCLcBGAs/s1600/nuthatch1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="265" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MsvHuVVnZ-I/WoMs91YfniI/AAAAAAAAHYc/hsB4u61rDLc4I2yQEUeaaoFp31l1ZbP1wCLcBGAs/s400/nuthatch1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nuthatch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I cook a <i>lot </i>so it's nice to have finely-feathered company when I'm busy, too.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AiDC__8lR_0/WoMtA4pUZDI/AAAAAAAAHYg/aH2cc3Ffr-oOMowdwdbo38Jn8skAHLsYQCLcBGAs/s1600/towhee1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AiDC__8lR_0/WoMtA4pUZDI/AAAAAAAAHYg/aH2cc3Ffr-oOMowdwdbo38Jn8skAHLsYQCLcBGAs/s400/towhee1.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Towhee</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Just add some seeds and be prepared for lots of birds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rFVqvmaMEUw/WoMwoimg1PI/AAAAAAAAHYw/r7jKZvfmMFAHA1-au3nzWk6NdjTf8EgqgCLcBGAs/s400/birdcrowd.jpg" width="400" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dear Winter, your days are numbered...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our budding herbalist came down to visit for several days last week. She's a big fan of tearooms so we lunched at <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Miss+Olivia's+Table/@35.7458053,-83.9849608,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x885e9e37a86db58b:0x9242c4a7cd33cf9d!8m2!3d35.7458053!4d-83.9827721" target="_blank">Miss Olivia's Table</a> in Maryville one day before she had to leave.<br />
Here she is with Miss Olivia herself.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
Miss Olivia's is a casual tearoom/sandwich shop that you might consider stopping by for lunch on your way to the Smokies. They serve an excellent chicken salad croissant, my favorite of the sandwiches on the menu, and I love the Summer Tea as did the budding herbalist.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k8k8LOIakts/WlzHuADgzpI/AAAAAAAAHWw/1f3LeXalPYg0VIhxJHi88XmC83FTAcw0ACLcBGAs/s1600/20180111_125002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-k8k8LOIakts/WlzHuADgzpI/AAAAAAAAHWw/1f3LeXalPYg0VIhxJHi88XmC83FTAcw0ACLcBGAs/s400/20180111_125002.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We were seated in the sun room and watched a squirrel scamper among the trees as we waited for our food. (It was raining so a silhouette is about the best my phone could do.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
Budding Herbalist had the strawberry trifle for dessert. She gave it 5 stars.<br />
This handy apple peeler-corer-slicer made quick work of the preparations for apple butter and fried apples. It has a lever that draws the rubber pad on the bottom up so it will suction to a countertop or other solid surface and remain stationary during use.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hello from the hills!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We're still having temperatures in the 80s (Fahrenheit) most days, but the mornings are now crisp and delightfully cool. This photo was in my camera and seemed fall-ish so here it is.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--UcRsi3b9NI/WdORqma8KwI/AAAAAAAAHRE/F9w7bu0-PWEYtQSiuWXQIr-YNCZFCmDjgCLcBGAs/s1600/DSC_0257.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="266" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--UcRsi3b9NI/WdORqma8KwI/AAAAAAAAHRE/F9w7bu0-PWEYtQSiuWXQIr-YNCZFCmDjgCLcBGAs/s400/DSC_0257.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was a messy business as that's the way I roll, but I tried making marshmallows for the first time last week. Think hot cocoa!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UgYpLc_-GIk/WdOWwQr34HI/AAAAAAAAHRw/gk0QAoZz1RcdBsEF-Mg1aT25AcQ8Z9FhACLcBGAs/s1600/020170928_195840.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UgYpLc_-GIk/WdOWwQr34HI/AAAAAAAAHRw/gk0QAoZz1RcdBsEF-Mg1aT25AcQ8Z9FhACLcBGAs/s400/020170928_195840.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Being the infamous procrastinator that I am I waited until the last day possible to make them for a bridal shower. They are fairly easy to make, though, so I was able to whip up three different kinds in one afternoon...plain, chocolate and coffee flavored. Coffee flavored ones are the best in my caffeinated opinion.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HNLRq-Qt3lM/WdOW01YTJbI/AAAAAAAAHR0/_TBq7WNEFqURRColP6o24D7Bi8lFvwZfwCLcBGAs/s1600/020170928_174349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HNLRq-Qt3lM/WdOW01YTJbI/AAAAAAAAHR0/_TBq7WNEFqURRColP6o24D7Bi8lFvwZfwCLcBGAs/s400/020170928_174349.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
The best how-to video I found on <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EixpnQRC2hw" target="_blank">Youtube is this one, click here</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />
There was a coffee bar along with the food stations for shower attendees to enjoy. The marshmallows were a hit as they are soooo much better than the ones in stores. (Also, there is no high fructose corn syrup so they are not so harmful, just sweet tastiness.) I didn't get a closeup of them, but they are on the tiered tray in the photo below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This Carolina Wren made use of my watering can for her nest.<br />
Just right of center in the photo below is a hungry nestling, mouth open wide and waiting for a delicious morsel.<br />
Above is a purplish Rose of Sharon tree that came up as a volunteer in a good spot in the back yard so I left it where grew. Below is the pink Double Rose of Sharon that I started from a cutting a few years ago.<br />
I had to go to the big city a few weeks ago and stopped by to see one of my favorite sites there. The Westmoreland Water Wheel in Knoxville, Tenn. was built in 1923 to supply electricity to the few residents in the immediate area at the time. It was built in the Tudor Revival Style.<br />
This lovely structure is in the National Register of Historic Places and is still in working order but hasn't supplied electricity to the locals since city services were installed.<br />
In the 24 years we've lived here I'd never seen a Sweet Autumn Clematis on our property until this year. It must be a good year for them though as we've seen them pop up allover near our house. It's fragrance is lovely.<br />
Hello from the foothills! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, we survived the total solar eclipse and lived to tell the story. I don't have any eclipse day pics to share (so I inserted this tasty Cherry Galette instead ;), but we did see (or rather not see) the sun disappear for a bit yesterday. I didn't bother about getting the approved eclipse glasses so on eclipse day Goodman rounded up a couple of welding helmets and some of those old folks glasses they send you home wearing from cataract surgery, and we were set. Sure, we probably looked like a couple of bobble-head corn nuts standing on the back deck gazing afar in those clunky helmets, but we witnessed the extraordinary event in our own style. ;) </div>
I've been busy making a few herbal preparations for our home apothecary and to give as gifts. <br />
Last week we took the grands to Tic-Toc Ice Cream Parlor in Loudon, Tenn. for a mini birthday celebration for the eldest. The old-fashioned parlor was featured in Southern Living Magazine several years ago.<br />
They serve wonderful homemade ice creams. Their famous Cardiac Arrest has 5 scoops of ice cream and as many toppings plus whipped cream, cherries and nuts. We all considered the Cardiac Arrest but opted for hot fudge sundaes instead. After ice cream we browsed a couple of antique thrift stores. These girls know where to find the good stuff.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I've been doing my usual watching-things-grow routine and collecting the harvest. <br />
There are no ripe tomatoes yet, but we have lots of green for fried green tomatoes. These are the Heirloom Beefsteak variety.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D5R6LGgqK_I/WVpPO8FNm2I/AAAAAAAAHMI/V_SQu-i39pM_SVRxcwMTp8W-T3QTQIFUwCLcBGAs/s1600/20170703_095510.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D5R6LGgqK_I/WVpPO8FNm2I/AAAAAAAAHMI/V_SQu-i39pM_SVRxcwMTp8W-T3QTQIFUwCLcBGAs/s400/20170703_095510.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Bee-balm.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jDxm1k2dvLw/WVov2s180UI/AAAAAAAAHLA/qqUOUIq-GkwMrf-Jq6cRtxbG8pHGOQg2gCLcBGAs/s1600/20170628_101735.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jDxm1k2dvLw/WVov2s180UI/AAAAAAAAHLA/qqUOUIq-GkwMrf-Jq6cRtxbG8pHGOQg2gCLcBGAs/s400/20170628_101735.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
When we bought our place there were five holly trees posing as bushes in front of the house. They required a lot of trimming to keep them in check and had outgrown their space so Goodman cut them down then dug out the stumps.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XQ8Uq8HUvVc/WVo1Rbk8mXI/AAAAAAAAHLk/Q1sedXuAF585WkUSdBQrTRmz7cpkChAUgCLcBGAs/s1600/20170502_142553.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XQ8Uq8HUvVc/WVo1Rbk8mXI/AAAAAAAAHLk/Q1sedXuAF585WkUSdBQrTRmz7cpkChAUgCLcBGAs/s400/20170502_142553.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We replaced the holly trees with Peach Drift Roses. If you're not familiar with them, Drift Roses are used to fill in lateral garden spaces. There are different colors, but this one is the only variety that has a rose scent. And what would a rose be without the fragrance? (Someone else's, not mine ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XIv1LnRynUA/WVov8VJ9WiI/AAAAAAAAHLE/lUbemChwmHIAVmnVbPA7dZC_geEOPofSwCLcBGAs/s1600/20170511_092708.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="900" data-original-width="1600" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XIv1LnRynUA/WVov8VJ9WiI/AAAAAAAAHLE/lUbemChwmHIAVmnVbPA7dZC_geEOPofSwCLcBGAs/s400/20170511_092708.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lavender from some new plants that have deeper color but less scent than a variety I've had for years. I planted the lavender behind the roses. I have to say it's a relief not having to trim those holly bushes this year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a few more project bags for needlework projects. They're great to have on hand for gifts, too.</div>
