The New Birds In Town

A few weeks ago I mentioned that a baby chick purchase had fallen through. Well, sometimes those disappointments work out for the best as I found some adorable ones that I think will be a better fit for our farm. A local farmer had some Lavender Orpington chicks for sale, and I got her last batch of the year, five straight run chicks. I had asked for eight, but it didn't work out that way. I'm happy with five though, I just hope they aren't all roosters. O.O We'll see...
Day old Lavender Orpington Chick
Lavender Orpingtons aren't your average run-of-the-mill egg layers. They're very docile and fluffy as a marshmallow. I hope mine look this good in a few months.

Since I wanted eight chicks I chose three Buff Brahmas that were also the same age to raise with the Lavender Orpingtons.
Lavender Orpington and Buff Brahma Chicks

Here's a short video of the chicks in a brooder in the kitchen near a window. Notice the one on the right looking longingly toward the window like it wants to be outside. Most of them are asleep by the end of the video.

Here's a look at how the Buff Brahmas should look like by next summer.

I've done just a bit of crocheting...

a new bathmat for one of the bathrooms.

 A couple of regular visitors.

The winter storm (It's still autumn. O.O) has arrived here in the South, too. Stay warm, Y'all!

Wishing everyone a Wonderful and Happy Thankgiving!!

  3. The chicks are adorable, and the adult birds in the photos are really beautiful. You'll have to post pictures of the one-year-old chicks next year. The bath mat looks way to pretty to use as a bath mat. :)

The little chicks are so cute, We've had buff orpingtons, but I'd not heard of lavender ones. The Buff Brahmas are one of the prettiest to look at, I think :) We had them one year and liked them very much...did well over the winter.
You are very blessed to have birds so close to your window. I think it is so peaceful to birdwatch. Warm blessings, dear Toni~

  16. What a bunch of cuties you have on your farm! I am sure not all of them will be roosters (crossing my fingers for you).
Here the winter has suddenly come too. Last week we had the first snow of the season up in the mountains -- and down here we are getting all the cold wind that comes from up there. Stay warm & enjoy crochet, I say! :-)

  22. I have wondered if you are doing well...you have been on my mind since Monday. I'm praying it is just the slower and quieter time of reflection as we ponder our Lord Jesus. We have a beautiful, sparkly 3 inches of snow here. May His everlasting arms surround and keep you and yours, Toni.

    1. Thank you, Jacqueline, I've been busy gathering materials and starting a new quilt. I'm participating in Bonnie Hunter's Celtic quiltalong so I've had limited time online the past week or so.

  28. Oh~ you know how much I love chicks... why didn't you call me so I could come and snuggle them? *haha* I REALLY enjoyed the video, too... my absolute favorite thing about raising chicks in the house is hearing those wonderful contented peeping sounds... *sigh. I would love some of those lavender Orphs and the Brahmas... they are so beautiful. You "dun" good! :)

  30. Your little chicks are adorable. We live in an residential area, but you are allowed to have chickens. Our backyard neighbor has a chicken coop near our fences and we enjoy hearing her rooster each morning. He makes his joyful noise unto the Lord each morning and welcomes our new day :)
I want to thank you for visiting my blog, because it bought be here and now I am your newest follower. Did you like my sawhorse quilting frame? It was cheap and it works great. I would love to invite you to come back and visit again, and I would be honored to have you as a mutual follower. I enjoyed your dandelion root coffee post and your bucket of black walnuts bought back memories. We use to spread them out in the gravel driveway and after a few days of driving over them the hauls would dry up and fall off the shells. Do you do that?
It is so nice to meet you.
