Several miles from where we live in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains (Tennessee side of the mountains) is a tiny town that was founded by a colony of Quakers from North Carolina in the 1790s.
There is a school called Friendsville Academy, but as I am participating in the Inspired Sunday meme I wanted to share photos of just the church.
There's a graveyard behind the church with many headstones so old that the engravings no longer tell the story behind them.
I like the fact that the town was named for the group of religious settlers and that the church is still standing and having regular services there.

We worship elsewhere so not sure if they're friendly.
DeleteWe have several Quaker churches in this area of Central New York State. They had a rich antislavery and women's rights history in the 1800s. Tom The Backroads Traveller
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephanie.
DeleteThanks for sharing this along with a little bit of history. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Sally. Thanks for visiting.
DeleteWe're not far from Friendsville- thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteIf you visit Friendsville, try and find the one traffic light - we couldn't find it, lol.
DeleteI love the weather beaten grave stones.
ReplyDeleteI do, too, Cathy. Thanks for visiting.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful old church and grounds! We used to live in an older Quaker town ourselves and I love the quaint look of the buildings. John Greenleaf Whitter and William Penn were names all over the city streets and buildings.
ReplyDeleteThe town you lived in sounds like a great place to visit.
DeleteWonder if the place was named after the Newbury near me in the UK. Good to see it is in use, I wonder about some of the ones over here.
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful place. I am learning much more about TN and like what I'm finding. Have you ever spent time in a cemetery reading headstones? To us ( and when our children were young), we'd spend time talking about eternity and it became more real to us that 'tis one life, t'will soon be past; only what done for Christ will last'. I hope you have a blessed and restfully productive week, sweet friend! Stay safe in Jesus!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting! I didn't know Quakers had churches. I live in an area of Ontario (Canada) settled by Quakers and they had meeting houses. No spires. :) So I learned something new.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the photos and history, Toni. I know that you and I have discussed Friendsville in the past, but your post with visuals helps me "see" it better. What a wonderful place!
ReplyDeleteAwesome pictures of such a beautiful historic church.
ReplyDeleteThat is nice. I like the old graveyard !
ReplyDeleteInteresting story. Did you know that many Quakers moved west from Virginia and the Carolinas in order to get away from the awful tradition of slavery? Some of them took slaves with them and freed them in Ohio.
ReplyDeleteWow! What fantastic photos of this fabulous, beautiful, old Friends Church. What a history of the Quakers. Wow! That is a fabulous old graveyard. Awesome photos of this lovely church!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure it is a lovely town. It certainly has a wonderful name and your photographs are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos and so very interesting.
ReplyDeleteYour photos and info on the beautiful old building are wonderful. What a great idea, "Inspired Sunday".
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many Friendsville there are in the US. There is a Friendsville in Garrett County, Maryland, with a very small population. We pass by it whenever we go to Deep Creek Lake.
ReplyDeleteI love that area. I would especially love to attend that church. Thank you for the photos!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for visiting my blog. I love this posting of the beautiful Friends Church. I would love to attend this awesome church.
ReplyDeleteHello from Michigan, I can hardly believe I have missed several postings. Very sad face. What a lovely story about the Friend's Church. Neat I think I would love to attend a church like this. Love your cabbage posting. What a grand idea. BUT it does not surprise me you are so creative in everything you do. Hugs Judy
ReplyDeleteWASHING OF WATER? EPHESIANS 5:26 BY STEVE FINNELL
ReplyDeleteWhat does the washing of water found in Ephesians 5:26 mean? Should you, as a believer in Christ, look to creed books and Bible commentaries for the answer to that question or should you look to translations of the Bible for truth? Do you want to trust men or do you want to trust God's written word?
Ephesians 5:25-26...just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, (NKJV)
How did Christ sanctify and cleanse the church? The church is the body of Christ. The church is comprised of Christians. How did Christ sanctify and cleanse the church?
Ephesians 5:26 to make her holy and clean, washed by baptism and God's word;(The Living Bible- Paraphrased)
Ephesians 5:26 that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word, (KJV)
Ephesians 5:26 in order to make her holy, cleaning her with the baptismal water by the Word. (Weymouth New testament)
Ephesians 5:26 He did this to make her holy by washing her in a bath of water with the word. (Common English Bible)
Ephesians 5:26 He made the church holy by the power of his word, and he made it pure by washing it with water.(Contemporary English Version)
Ephesians 5:26 In order that he might sanctify it, purifying [it] by the washing of water by [the] word, (Darby Translation)
Ephesians 5:26 He died to make the church holy. He used the telling of the Good News to make the church clean by washing it with water. (ERV-Easy-to-Read-Version)
Ephesians 5:26 He did this to make the church holy by cleaning it,washing it using water along with the spoken words. (God's Word Translation)
Ephesians 5:26 He did this to dedicate the church to God by his word, after making it clean by washing it in water, (Good News Translation)
Ephesians 5:26 He did this to make the church holy by cleansing it, washing it using water alone with the spoken words. (Names of God Bible)
Ephesians 5:26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, (New American Standard Bible)
Ephesians 5:26 He did that so that he might make the church people holy, when they were washed with water by God's word. (World English N.T.)
Do you really want leave the interpretation of Ephesians 5:26 to others, why would you not read it and believe what it says?
Is God smart enough to guide men to accurately translate the Bible?
Two choices: 1. Trust God's written word, the BIBLE. or 2. Trust preachers, priests, pastors, Bible commentators, the man on the street, your friends and relatives or creed books, for the truth and nothing but the truth.
Mark 16:16 "He who believes and is baptized will be saved....(NKJV)
