I'm growing calendula this year for the first time.
Several months ago I read a most intriguing account of wonderful results as to it's medicinal properties and couldn't wait to grow my own. Click here to read the same article, and you'll also discover one of the best home-making blogs in cyberland. Seriously.
I enjoy growing cucumbers, but I do not like that they ramble and roam everywhere within 30 feet of where they are planted so....
Goodman and I visited the bamboo patch along our fence line...
And extracted several poles so I could make a trellis for the cucumber vines.
We cut and tied them together with twine.
The hollow core of the bamboo poles allows for sliding the poles onto skinny pieces of rebar so I pounded 1/4 in. pieces of rebar into the raised bed where I wanted the trellis, then I "hung" it onto the rebar posts. It's very sturdy and has withstood several storms, and when fall arrives I can simply lift it off the rebar posts and store it for the winter.
In case you are interested in making your own nifty garden trellis here is a link to some very cool and useful lashing methods.
How does your garden grow this year? Do tell.

Well, right now my garden (what there is of it) consists of half-died up tomatoes and some flowers that may not make it rest of this stifling summer. When it gets to be like it has been here the past few weeks, I just want to give up and pray for fall! Thos cucumber vines are so pretty and I love those yellow daisy-ish ones! Your bargen is just beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debby. Sorry you're having a stifling summer. We usually do, but it's not too just now. I am looking forward to fall though.
DeleteI grew some calendula for medicinal purposes also, but forgot to harvest it. Maybe it will rebloom. Love the burgundy Stella d'oro lilies. I have some of the yellow ones. It must be nice to have a ready supply of bamboo! Have a lovely week!
ReplyDeleteHugs
Jane
Thank you, Jane, and I hope your calendula does rebloom.
DeleteI love growing calendula flowers I found out about one variety recently that says it has the most medicine value in it I got it at rare seeds out of missouri-love your trellis I was just wondering how strong it would be til you mentioned the rebar-great idea! we pretty much got too much rain here my onions rotted in the ground, many seeds didn't come up, my beans are finally flowering and my cukes are doing well-on a fence too, and I need to weed my sweet potato patch and hill some of the vines
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy! We've had some failures, too, like our lack of asparagus, but for the most part we've done pretty well.
DeleteThe calendula is beautiful! I think my mom used to grow some just for their beauty. Nice job on the trellis. We were just harvesting some of our cucumbers today.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bethany, always good to have you stop by.
DeleteI thought stella dora's were cookies! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove your cucumber trellis! I am late in planting cucumbers. I saw a few plants on clearance at Home Depot and thought I'd give them a try. It has been so hot here but I keep watering them. They aren't dead yet. I also bought zucchini and yellow squash plants at the same time and those are fairing better.
Thank you, Gina, and I hope your plants do well. Lol on the cookies! :)
DeleteYour flowers are so pretty! I love when they're pretty and useful. :) Your cucumber trellis is so nice. It is hard swimming through our vines to find cucumbers. Hope you have a wonderful week! :) Vicki
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vicki, and I hope you have a wonderful week as well.
Deleteso cool and creative!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Theresa!

ReplyDeleteThank you, Daisy, I did link up after all.
DeleteI love your cucumber trellis. We have just a few cucumber plants this year and they are roaming...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sandra, we have just a few also, but I still didn't want them everywhere. ;)
DeleteVery nice. !
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHello, you have a wonderful blog. Just dropping in from doing some blog hopping. Your lilies are pretty and the Calendula is a pretty plant, I have to look up it's medicinal uses. Your trellis is a great idea and easy to make. Great post, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteHi Eileen, I was surprised to find out calendula is great for a cold or flu.
DeleteThanks for stopping by!
Wow, this is supper interesting, I've never seen a trellis of cucumbers.

I'm glad you stopped by Amalia!
DeleteMy garden... Oh I wish I had one! ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut I can tell you about a friend's garden. She planted cucumbers, melons, watermelons and bell peppers. All of them are growing well except for the peppers. They didn't get enough water (no wonder) and they aren't plump enough.
We are having 85-100F everyday. No rain for months. Autumn isn't coming fast enough for me this year. Stay cool and enjoy your garden! :-)
Alhana, your gardening friend must be a good one because bell peppers are not easy to grow as they are very finicky. It seems the weather is changing in different sections of our country. Usually in July we have very little rain, but the last 3 years we have had to mow our grass every week or it becomes a jungle. It is very hot though.
DeleteSure enjoyed the peek into your gardens! It all is looking great!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Debbi, I'm glad you stopped by. :)
DeleteWhat a wonderful trellis, my friend! I am a newbie gardener and have not yet tried my hand at cucumbers....maybe next year :)
