It's Officially Autumn

I hope it's cool breezes and sunny skies where you are. Here in the south we're still waiting on the cool breezes. In the meantime....I've been finishing the strips for this crochet afghan that I showed you a few posts back. All twelve strips are done, and I'm slooooowly sewing them together. Here's some knitting content. I'm not finished with this project yet, but I'm getting a little closer to finishing everyday.

These are tiny turnip greens poking their heads up out of the ground. We're looking forward to eating these little fellows in a month or so. They're quite tasty, and we love a nice dinner of them along with a country ham biscuit. Have I mentioned we're Southern, Y'all?

I harvested a bumper crop of this plant recently. Any guesses what it might be? Hint, we use a lot of it during cold season for chest congestion.

This moth lit on the window screen and stayed there several hours. It had a birds-eye view of my kitchen sink the whole time. I wonder if it was just taking a break or if, maybe, it liked the smell of my dishwashing liquid...green apple scent.

We're enjoying the seasonal candies this year...maybe a little too much, but anyways, have a handful of this mix before it's all gone.

Big South Fork Scenic Railway Trip

Saturday we took visiting family members on a short train trip into the backwoods of Kentucky.

At Stearns, Kentucky you can see and experience the same ride that coal miners took everyday to work during the 1920s through the 1950s. I got movie clips of our train but no good still pics. Our train had several open-air cars. I was hanging out the window a bit to get this picture, which was a big no-no, but my readers are so worth it! ;)

There were lots of big rocks and a stream along the way to the mine.

This picture is of a reconstructed area of the mine. You can see what a small space it was to work in. The tools were a sight more primitive than what is used nowdays. I felt sorry for the men who worked there even though the mine is no longer in operation.

This is the tipple where the coal was loaded into the train cars when the mine was in operation. We rode in the caboose on the way back to the depot. That was fun.

I got a little knitting done even with company staying with us. Here are a couple more fall colored (S&C Natural) Nubbins Dishcloths. Candy corn anyone? Have all you want; there's more. :)

Sa-lute! I knitted this red, white and blue Nubbins Dishcloth on the way to ride the train, on the train and on the way back home. Sigh. I love knitting.

Everlasting Summer in the South

And the summer of '07 went on and on and on. No Ma'am, I'm not complainin'...just statin' facts and really, really looking forward to fall. Amazingly, our pink crape myrtle is still blooming. The saga of Nubbins & stripes is ongoing, also. Here's a Nubbins Dishcloth in Pinky Stripes by S&C. This pattern shows off the stripes the best that I've seen so far, and the garter stitch cloth itself is soft and easy to use.

I knitted a 100-stitch long back scrubber for the shower with another ball of Pinky Stripes yarn. Last week when talking to my daughter, B on the phone she mentioned that she had been knitting Nubbin Back Scrubbers! Well, you know how it is when a knitter hears something new, especially with nubbins involved, so here's my version of her idea. It's 26 inches long and almost 4 inches wide. It works fine. Yes, those are nubbins on the ends. ;)
