Happy Summer, Y'all

Greetings from the hills!

We had a week or two of sweltering days when the temperature hit 90°F then last week we had rain and very pleasant days.  Not so this week...come back to me, springtime weather!
Bee Balm
 My favorite lilies are blooming.
Burgundy Day Lily, my favorite
The Carolina Wren family in the fuchsia basket is coming along nicely.  There were eight eggs in all, and it's a tight squeeze in the nest now that the hatchlings are growing.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE homegrown tomatoes?  My earliest memories of them were when I was 8 years old and stayed at my grandmother's farm for a week.  I watched her milk the Jersey, helped peel fruit from the trees and gather garden produce.   One afternoon she handed me a salt shaker and told me to go into the garden and eat all the tomatoes I wanted.  I obeyed to the fullest extent my stomach could handle.  I've never been the same since that day.   They do taste better outside.

After tomatoes I think cantaloupes are a close runner up.  It will be a few weeks on those.

The hydrangeas are beginning to fade, now, after blooming for a full month, but they're still beautiful.  I highly recommend them for your garden.  They can easily be started with a cutting from a friend or bought from nurseries, of course.

Some time ago I was in a medical office for a routine visit when a health professional asked me a question:  "Your not taking any drugs for osteoporosis, are you? "   (Whaaaa?? was blasting my brain,  I'm not old enough....but I managed to recover before I actually spoke. :)  They continued,  "I was asking because they cause more harm than good and don't help with osteoporosis."

Now, this was a doctor, a real doctor (that doesn't take bribes (perks) in exchange for prescribing drugs to patients) telling me that legally prescribed drugs for osteoporosis do the patient more harm than good.

Happily, the Be Your Own Doctor II book offers four pages of things we can do to prevent osteoporosis.  I recommend both books in the series as they are invaluable to me, and I've said before, I have no affiliation with them.

Hope y'all are enjoying the beginnings of summer.
Stay cool!

Glad you've found a 'real' doctor. I know how scarce they are.

  3. Happy summer! Loved reading about the happenings in your world... It is winter here in South Arica, and I have the gas heater on as I write!
Your garden is looking so good! Surely there is nothing more satisfying than harvesting your own fresh produce?
Ahh...hydrangeas are my favourite flowers.... And rejoicing with you that you've found a doctor who supports natural alternative!
    Blessings and love!

  4. Sometimes is difficult to believe how much faster and earlier things grow in your neck of the world. We had nearly a month and a half of rain almost everyday and sometimes 3 and 4 times a day, if not all day. Right before the huge constant rainfall we had already been having a nice Spring with quite a bit of rain but managed a few days where we could get our garden out. It came up and then the rain brought it to a standstill, but my hopes are still high.

My tomatoes are about as big as golf balls. I have 30 of the most beautiful heirloom tomato plants you've ever seen! LOL!! Of course, that's the dreamer in me. I see them ripe and luscious! I too spent a great deal of time in the garden with a salt shaker. Wasn't it just wonderful!?

    1. Hi Nina June! We had so much rain in the spring that our plants just crept along waiting for a dry and warm spell, too. I'm glad you are enjoying your garden so well. And yes, those days with the salt shaker in the garden are hard to beat. :)

  5. Your pictures are beautiful! Hydrangeas have always been a favorite of mine. Probably because my mom has always loved them so my dad has always made sure they grow in abundant profusion for her! I love the baby birds in the nest! Last year my yard was overflowing with nest of all different kinds but not so much this year. We have hit our HOT DAYS now too. Our spring was nothing but rain! Our Illinois river has been flooding left and right!
So good to visit with you again!!!

How sweet to hear about your mom loving hydrangeas and your dad making sure she had them in good measure. Love it! I've been taking cuttings to root. I like having extras to pass around to the flower-needy. ;)
Thank you so much for stopping by!

  7. Meds which are suitable to treat a disease will always interfere or damage anything else in the process. You need to carefully put in the balance what are your priorities. From time to time there is a sincere doctor that will inform you and allow you to take that decision freely. :-)

It is sweltering hot in Southern Europe these days and really umcomfortable, I must say. Fires everywhere and people fainting. Summer is already looking dreadful in our part of the globe. I'm glad to hear you had rain though!

    1. Hi Alhana! The point you made on the meds is exactly what isn't explained to the patient, sometimes through negligence and other times through deliberate means.

I hope you have a milder summer than normal or that it passes so swiftly you don't notice it. We're roasting now. Whew!
